contemporary arts at the
University of Brighton

This event is part of Lloyd Corporation

The End of the Car Boot Sale, Dr Annebella Pollen, 2019

Join us for this online talk with Dr Annebella Pollen, University of Brighton. Picking up on the themes of Lloyd Corporation’s exhibition, Today’s gift is tomorrow’s commodity. Yesterday’s commodity is tomorrow’s found art object. Today’s art object is tomorrow’s junk. And yesterday’s junk is tomorrow’s heirloom, Annebella Pollen explores the local and global circuits of the secondhand clothing market, looking at how divested garments can move at speed through desire and disgust, traversing clashing values of use and waste.

Dr Annebella Pollen is Reader in History of Art and Design at the University of Brighton. Her research examines the visual and material culture of everyday life including found photographs, archival ephemera and secondhand clothes.
This is part of a programme of events that respond to Today’s gift is tomorrow’s commodity. Yesterday’s commodity is tomorrow’s found art object. Today’s art object is tomorrow’s junk. And yesterday’s junk is tomorrow’s heirloom by Lloyd Corporation.
