James William Murray is an artist and PhD researcher in the School of Art, University of Brighton. For this research project, Murray will install a new series of ‘object-paintings’ Untitled (James) I-V in Brighton CCA: Dorset Place. Viewers are invited to approach these works as realia – i.e. ‘learning objects’ – for thinking through subjectivities underlying formal, minimal, and abstract contemporary art practice.

Murray will be writing about this work on-site at Dorset Place throughout the project. Visitors are encouraged to book slots to view the installation and have an informal discussion about the work and its broader research contexts with the artist in person. The documentation of the installation and conversations it initiates will be presented in a subsequent publication that will form a critical part of Murray’s PhD thesis.

The project will be supported by several in-person and digital events, including a discussion with the assistant curator of Southampton City Gallery Tom Laver, an Instagram live exhibition walkthrough, and a small group tour. The dates and times of these events will be announced via our Instagram @brightoncca and will be updated on this webpage over the course of the project.

This project is funded by Arts Council England and the University of Brighton doctoral college.

This is project #1 of Dorset Place x 11 collaborations – a new series of projects and work responding to the university as a site for experimentation and learning. Admission is free and open to all.

Dorset Place is Brighton CCA’s project space and hosts a series of short projects and exhibitions by emerging artists, organisations, curators and students. With a fast changing programme, the space is an exciting platform for experimentation, collaboration and engagement with new ideas and voices. Dorset Place allows us to be responsive, initiating and supporting projects which stand alone or connect to our wider programme. The space is offered free of charge with curatorial, marketing and limited technical support.
