Front Room Film: It’s not about you, Benjamin A Owen
Acts of Transfer
6.00 – 6.00pm
Our Front Room Film programme distributes curated bundles online that include digital access to a film for 24-hours, a contextual introduction to the project and a text in the form of an essay or in conversation.
This programme of Front Room Film engages with Acts of Transfer, a project about returns, re-enactments, repetitions, and retellings. Beginning in 2021 as a collaboration between artist Katy Beinart and writer Lizzie Lloyd, Acts of Transfer documents and reactivates a selection of artworks from the past that contain elements of social engagement or public participation.
For the first in the series we are screening It’s Not About You by Benjamin A Owen. As part of Acts of Transfer, Katy Beinart, Lizzie Lloyd and Benjamin A Owen revisited the original work, AcCord: Going Along without a Body (2018) by Benjamin A Owen with Marion Howell. AcCord is an experimental documentary using soundtrack to radically reframe live-recorded interviews with an ageing community.
Please contact Polly Wright (Programme Producer, Brighton CCA) with any thoughts, reflections or questions about the project.
Enjoy!

Benjamin A Owen is a Scotland-based artist that makes work with film, music, performance, and installation, exploring vocal cultures historically marginalised or under-represented, particularly within ageing communities. A celebration of participation, improvisation, and collaboration are at the heart of the practice. They often use live soundtracking with invited musicians to reframe and undermine relationships between film, sound, ageing, and body.
This series of events is an extension of Acts of Transfer and has been developed in collaboration between the artists, Brighton CCA and Towner Eastbourne.
