Brighton CCA: Dorset Place presents Skeleton Tree by Daniel Pettitt, the 2022 Freelands Painting Fellow in the Fine Art Painting Department at the University of Brighton.

This collection of new works are epithets, love letters, refrains, reverberations, stealth bombers, and jumbo jets.

Each week, the paintings hung in the gallery will be changed, echoing the shifting nature of memory and connections to visual language. Visitors are invited to share perspectives and attitudes to painting as the space shifts and Pettitt reveals further facets of his creative process. In turn, the paintings are in direct dialogue with a selection of drawings exhibited in the space, a way of working integral to Pettitt’s studio practice.

This exhibition forms part of the second edition of the Freelands Painting Fellowship, a two-year pilot programme of Painting Fellowships in partnership with three universities across the UK, Bath Spa University, University of Brighton and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Daniel Pettitt (b.1986 Brighton) graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2017 and Bath School of Art & Design in 2008. Selected solo exhibitions include Granite and Rainbow, PALFREY, London (2019); Tin Decade, Roper Gallery, Bath (2019). Selected group exhibitions include A Generous Space, Hastings Contemporary, Hastings (2021); PULP, The Florence Trust, London (2021); DARK LANTERN, Galerie Sabine Kunst, Munich (2019); Little Bouket, 49 West Princes Street, Glasgow(2019); Malevolent Eldritch Shrieking, Attercliffe™, Sheffield (2018); Heads Roll, Graves Gallery Sheffield Museums (2018)

Dorset Place is Brighton CCA’s project space and hosts a series of short projects and exhibitions by emerging artists, organisations, curators and students. With a fast changing programme, the space is an exciting platform for experimentation, collaboration and engagement with new ideas and voices. Dorset Place allows us to be responsive, initiating and supporting projects which stand alone or connect to our wider programme. The space is offered free of charge with curatorial, marketing and limited technical support.
